Silica Sand for Foundry Buyers

Foundry sand selection is not based on silica content alone. Grain-size distribution, grain fineness, fines content, moisture, clay-related parameters and the casting process can all influence whether a sand is suitable for a particular application.

Babhaniya Overseas works with industrial buyers to understand their required running size and grading, discuss the requested technical specifications, and coordinate supply according to the agreed requirements.

Whether you are evaluating sand for a new casting application or looking for a supply partner for an established process, start with your current specification, sample requirements and target grading.

What Matters When Selecting Foundry Sand?

Share the following information when evaluating silica sand for your foundry. The relevant acceptance limits depend on your process, binder system and technical specification.

01

Grain Fineness

Confirm the required AFS Grain Fineness Number (AFS GFN). It is a calculated indicator of grain fineness based on sieve-analysis data, not a value that can be reliably assigned from a commercial size label alone.

02

Sieve Analysis

Review the distribution of particles across the relevant sieve sizes. The proportion retained on each sieve helps buyers assess whether the material matches the required grading.

03

Fines & Clay-Related Parameters

Establish the acceptable limits for fines and clay-related content where relevant to your process. These parameters should be tested or documented when required by your specification.

04

Chemical Composition

Specify the chemical limits that matter to your foundry, including silica content and relevant impurities. Chemical acceptance criteria should be agreed before supply.

05

Moisture & Conditioning

Confirm the moisture limits, storage conditions and any drying or conditioning requirements applicable to your operation.

06

Process Compatibility

Identify whether the sand is intended for green sand moulding, chemically bonded systems, core making or another foundry process. Requirements can differ by application.

Running Size, AFS GFN & Sieve Analysis

Running-size material can be a practical starting point when discussing a foundry sand requirement. To confirm suitability, the running size should be considered alongside a sieve analysis and the buyer's target grading.

1. Start With the Running Size

Tell us the running size you currently use or want to evaluate. If you have a reference sample, product specification or sieve distribution from your existing supplier, share it so the required grading can be understood more precisely.

2. Define the Sieve Distribution

Specify the relevant sieve series, the percentage retained or passing on each sieve, and any limits for oversize grains or fines. The grading can then be discussed and customized to your stated requirements, subject to technical confirmation.

3. Confirm AFS GFN

Use sieve-analysis results to calculate or verify the AFS Grain Fineness Number when this is required. A measured or calculated value should only be quoted when supported by appropriate sieve data and the applicable calculation method.

Important technical note: A running-size description by itself does not establish the full sieve distribution or AFS GFN. We do not publish a fixed AFS GFN or a universal sieve-analysis table for this product page because those values have not been confirmed by a foundry-specific test report.

Information to Share for a Grading Request

Required informationWhat the buyer should provide
Running sizeYour current or target running-size description and any reference specification.
Sieve seriesThe sieve sizes or testing standard used by your foundry.
Grading limitsRequired percentage retained or passing on each relevant sieve, including oversize and fines limits.
AFS GFNYour target value or acceptable range, plus the calculation or testing basis if specified.
ApplicationGreen sand moulding, core making, chemically bonded sand or another process.
Acceptance documentsRequired COA, sieve-analysis report, sample approval process and any other quality documents.

Have a sieve-analysis sheet from your current supplier? Share it with your enquiry so the requested grading can be reviewed against your specification.

Chemical Specifications for Foundry Sand

Chemical requirements depend on the foundry's application and acceptance criteria. Buyers should state their required SiO₂ level and any limits for iron oxide or other relevant constituents. A supplier's chemical report should be checked against those limits before material approval.

SiO₂ — Silica Content

Confirm the minimum silica content required by your specification and request a representative chemical analysis for the offered material.

Fe₂O₃ — Iron Oxide

Where iron content is controlled, confirm the buyer's maximum acceptable level and verify the reported result against it.

Other Chemical Limits

Identify any additional oxide, loss-on-ignition or impurity limits that are important for your process. Only documented results should be used to confirm compliance.

Sample-specific reporting: Chemical values should be linked to the particular tested sample and its report. They should not automatically be treated as guaranteed specifications for every grade, production lot or shipment.

How to Source Foundry Silica Sand

Step 1 — Share Your Specification

Provide your running size, target sieve distribution, AFS GFN requirement if applicable, chemical limits and intended process.

Step 2 — Review Technical Requirements

Confirm which tests and documents are available or required, and identify any additional testing needed before approval.

Step 3 — Confirm Commercial Terms

Discuss quantity, packaging, destination port, shipping terms, sample approval and delivery requirements before finalizing the order.

Foundry-Grade Silica Sand FAQs

What is AFS Grain Fineness Number (AFS GFN)?

AFS GFN is an indicator of average grain fineness calculated from sieve-analysis data using the applicable method. It should be supported by the relevant sieve results rather than assumed from a running-size label.

Can I order silica sand based on running size?

Running size is a useful starting point for discussion. For a more precise match, provide your sieve series, percentage retained or passing requirements and acceptable limits for oversize particles and fines.

Can sieve analysis be customized to my foundry requirement?

You can submit your target sieve distribution for review. The required grading, availability and ability to meet the specification must be confirmed before the material is offered as compliant.

Do you publish a fixed AFS GFN on this page?

No. A foundry-specific AFS GFN has not been confirmed for this page. We avoid publishing an unsupported number. Share your target AFS GFN and sieve requirements so the testing and documentation needed can be established.

What information should I send for a foundry sand quotation?

Include your running size, sieve analysis or target grading, AFS GFN if applicable, chemical limits, process type, quantity, packaging, destination and preferred shipping terms.

Can a chemical COA alone confirm foundry suitability?

No. A chemical COA provides chemical results for the tested sample, but foundry suitability may also depend on sieve distribution, grain fineness, fines, clay-related parameters, moisture and process-specific requirements.
